Ikuo Sekine, Chair of the Board of Directors of Shiretoko Nature Foundation, says as follows about the campaign: “We were extremely surprised to find that Mozilla Japan and Shiretoko Nature Foundation, despite being engaged in completely different fields, have many things in common, including a sense of commitment to our future environment, and numerous activities supported by volunteers. This joint campaign with Mozilla Japan will surely become an initiative to conserve nature in Shiretoko, which has gained global recognition as a World Natural Heritage Site. Unless many people learn about Shiretoko and desire, even a little to communicate its value to the future generations, no action can succeed. We hope that the Discover Shiretoko website will connect us at Shiretoko Nature Foundation with as many people as possible, especially those who were very distant from the natural beauty of Shiretoko..”
Satoko Takita, Chair of the Board of Directors of Mozilla Japan, states as follows: “What started the campaign was an interest sparked by the code name ‘Shiretoko’ for the soon-to-be-released Firefox 3.5. We learned about Shiretoko Nature Foundation and its nature conservation activities, carried out with a far-sighted vision for the future and supported by many people with a common passion to protect Shiretoko’s nature beauty. We felt the Foundation had a great deal in common in various respects with the Mozilla Project with its many community-supported activities. We planned this campaign thinking that we could increase support for each other’s activities by letting people know about these similarities. We hope that people who visit the website will learn about both ‘Shiretokos’ and discover something special.”
John Lilly, CEO of Mozilla Corporation, comments: “I learned about Shiretoko Nature Foundation and the activities of its volunteers through this campaign. I was deeply moved to learn about their passionate love for Shiretoko. I too will participate in this campaign with the hope that their efforts will be recognized by people not only in Japan but around the world.”
Since its establishment in 1988, the Shiretoko Nature Foundation has conducted initiatives in environmental education and raising awareness, wildlife conservation and management , and investigative research based at the Shiretoko National Park Nature Center (Shari-cho, Hokkaido) and the Rausu Visitor Center (Rausu-cho, Hokkaido). It has also taken on the “Shiretoko 100 m2 Movement” promoted by Shari township, and has conducted forest restoration work on abandoned farmlands. The Shari and Rausu townships provide funding for these activities in both jurisdictions, which together span the Shiretoko peninsula to promote “learning, protecting and communicating” about nature in the Shiretoko World Heritage Site with the support of many volunteers and foundation members.
